Chichijima during the 19th century was formerly known as Peel Island and part of the Ogasawara archipelago of Japan. The English distinguished Chichijima as part of the Bonin Islands. Despite its many names, this city was discovered in 1543 by Spanish explorer Bernardo de la Torre. Archaeological excavations confirmed that people of Micronesia once lived on the island and until the spring of 1830, it remained uninhabited. Chichijima was molded with mountainous islands, subtropical forests, turquoise blue waters, white sandy beaches, and steep rocky cliffs attracting tourists and avid adventurers. Its natural beauty remains untouched and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Travelers can snorkel the beautiful coral of Miyanohama Beach or explore the ship wreck at Sakaiura Beach. Adventurers can hike through the jungle to the coastline at Hatsuneura Beach, or trek the summit to Mount Chuo Observation Deck. Local and fresh seafood and sashimi can be found in restaurants and bars around Futami Port as well!
